The EMPULSE employee satisfaction survey consists of 36 questions and is divided into four parts:


  • Parts 1 & 2 gather employee opinions on the employment deal breakers summarized in the Industry of Choice I & II studies developed by the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation (NRAEF) and The Coca-Cola Company.
  • Part 3 gathers information regarding employee general satisfaction and overall opinion about the restaurant itself.
  • Part 4 gathers demographic information to help restaurant managers better diagnose and understand the challenges within their company.

For each question, survey participants are asked to respond to a series of statements using the following 5-point agreement scale:

Part 1 – Organizational Culture

The questions in this section deal with shared values and behavioral norms that employees experience on the job that are influenced by management, especially at the unit level.

I work for a manager who treats people fairly

Part 2 – Human Resources Practices

The questions in this section address the formal policies of compensation, benefits, schedules, workload and other factors that can be directly controlled by management.

Total Questions: 14

Sample Question:
I work enough hours to meet my needs

Part 3 – Overall Satisfaction

The questions in this section address restaurant quality, work quality, job satisfaction and overall satisfaction.

Total Questions: 4

Sample Question:
I would work recommend this restaurant as a good place to work

Part 4 – Demographics and Work History

The questions in this section are for classification purposes only. The answers are used only to divide the interviews into groups.

Total Questions: 7

Sample Question:
Do you primarily work in the front of the house where you serve or wait on customers, or the back of the house where you are preparing food or cleaning? If primarily front of the house, press 1. If primarily back of the house, press 2. If you work an equal amount of time in the front and the back, press 3. To skip this question, press 9.
